Gastric Balloon

We offer the world’s first and only weight loss balloon that doesn't require surgery, endoscopy or anaesthesia. You can lose 10-15% of total body weight on average and sustain up to 95% of weight loss one year after the balloon has passed.

What is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon, or intragastric balloon, is a non-surgical weight loss tool designed to give you the extra help you need to adjust to a healthier lifestyle.

The Allurion Balloon is the only weight loss device that can be placed without surgery, endoscopy or anaesthesia. The balloon is designed to partially fill the stomach to help you feel full after a smaller volume of food.

It is a thin polyurethane membrane folded into a small, vegan-based capsule which is swallowed, placement confirmed using X-ray and then filled with fluid. After approximately 4 months, the fluid is released and the membrane is passed via the gastrointestinal tract.

Who is Suitable for a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is suitable for individuals who:

  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 27-40 kg/m2
  • Have unsuccessfully tried other weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, without significant long-term results
  • Are ineligible for or prefer not to have bariatric surgery
  • Are motivated to make lifestyle changes and commit to a supervised weight loss program
Kidney stone, urinary stone, ureteric stone, renal calculi, renal colic, nephrolithiasis

Who is Not Suitable for a Gastric Balloon?

  • Patients who have had previous gastric surgery
  • Presence of a hiatal hernia >5 cm
  • Patients with coagulopathy (bleeding tendency)
  • Bleeding lesion of UGI tract
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Severe liver disease

Benefits of Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon offers several benefits for individuals seeking weight loss. These benefits may include:

  • Effective Weight Loss: Reduces food intake and promotes portion control.
  • Non-Surgical Approach: Gastric balloon did not involve incisions, making it a less invasive option with minimal downtime and reduced risks compared to surgical interventions.
  • Short Procedure Duration: Placing a gastric balloon typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes, allowing individuals to resume their daily activities shortly after the procedure.
  • Reversible Procedure: Gastric balloon is a temporary weight loss solution. The balloon typically lasts for 16 weeks.

Alternative Options to Gastric Balloon

If the gastric balloon is not suitable for an individual or if they prefer alternative options, there are other non-surgical weight loss interventions available. These options may include:

  • Dietary and Lifestyle Modifications: Working with a registered dietitian and adopting healthy eating habits, portion control, and regular physical activity can support weight loss goals.
  • Medical Weight Management Programs: These programs provide comprehensive support and guidance for weight loss through dietary counselling, exercise plans, behaviour modification strategies, and ongoing monitoring by healthcare professionals.
  • Pharmacotherapy: Medications approved for weight loss management may be considered part of a comprehensive weight loss plan.

What to Do Before Gastric Balloon Placement?

Before undergoing gastric balloon placement, there are important steps to follow to ensure a successful procedure and optimal outcomes. Here are key tasks to complete:

  • Initial Consultation with our bariatric surgeon who is experienced in gastric balloon placement. Your medical history, weight loss goals, suitability and concerns will be discussed during this consultation.
  • Medical Evaluation may include blood tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests as necessary. You’ll be started on antacids and be given medication for anxiety if you’re feeling anxious in the lead up to your procedure.
  • Nutritional Counselling with a registered dietitian to develop a preoperative dietary plan focusing on healthy eating habits, portion control, and preparation for the gastric balloon procedure.
  • Lifestyle Modifications include adopting a healthy diet, incorporating regular physical activity, and addressing unhealthy habits.

What Happens During Gastric Balloon Placement?

The placement takes place during a 20 to 30 minute outpatient visit. You’ll swallow a capsule containing the deflated balloon with a catheter attached. Once the balloon is confirmed to be in your stomach via x-ray, it is filled with water through the catheter. The balloon is designed to hold 550ml. A second x-ray is then performed to ensure the balloon is filled correctly. That’s it!

At approximately 16 weeks after placement, the Allurion Balloon self-empties and passes out of the body naturally.

Once the balloon is in place, we will support you as you make the necessary changes to your diet and lifestyle to achieve your weight loss goals and maintain your weight loss after the balloon is removed.

What to Expect After Gastric Balloon Placement?

Following gastric balloon placement, there are important considerations for a successful recovery and weight loss journey. Here are some common aspects of the post-operative phase:

  • Recovery Period: Most individuals can expect to resume their normal activities within a day or two after the procedure. It is common to experience discomfort, nausea, or bloating during the initial days, which can be managed with prescribed medications. Most patients will only take one day off work for the procedure.
  • Dietary Guidelines: Your team will provide specific dietary guidelines after gastric balloon placement. This typically includes a liquid diet for a few days and a gradual transition to solid foods.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Healthy lifestyle habits, including regular physical activity and proper nutrition, are crucial for long-term weight loss. Your team will guide you on incorporating these changes into your daily routine.
  • Regular Follow-up: Appointments with your healthcare team will be scheduled to monitor your progress, address any concerns or questions, and make necessary adjustments to your care plan.
  • Balloon removal: After approximately 16 weeks inside your stomach, a time-activated release valve will open, allowing the balloon to empty and pass naturally through the gastrointestinal tract without the need for a removal procedure. In rare cases, the Allurion Balloon may require endoscopic or surgical intervention for removal.

Gastric Balloon Care Plan

A comprehensive care plan is essential for a successful gastric balloon experience. Here are key elements that may be included in your care plan:

  • Nutritional Guidance: A registered dietitian will provide personalised dietary guidelines, focusing on portion control, balanced nutrition, and healthy eating habits. They will support you in making sustainable dietary changes and optimising your weight loss journey.
  • Regular Follow-up Appointments: You will have scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare team to monitor your progress, evaluate weight loss outcomes, and provide ongoing support and guidance. You’ll also be able to track your progress using the digital scales and smartwatch and the Allurion app.
  • Psychological Support: Emotional support is important throughout your weight loss journey. Counselling services or support groups can help you navigate the psychological aspects of the process and provide guidance for long-term success.
  • Physical Activity Recommendations: Regular physical activity is essential for weight loss and wellbeing. Your healthcare team will guide you on gradually increasing your activity level based on your recovery progress and individual needs.
  • Monitoring and Surveillance: Regularly monitoring your weight, overall health, and balloon status is important.

The balloon procedure is generally safe. Still, as with any procedure, complications may occur and include but are not limited to:

  • Oesophageal or gastric ulceration
  • Oesophageal or gastric perforation
  • Balloon intolerance requiring early removal
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Deflation of the balloon can lead to a small bowel blockage, which becomes a medical emergency
