Nutritional Counselling

One of the first steps in preparing for a successful post-surgery diet is working closely with a registered dietitian specialising in bariatric nutrition. They can provide personalised guidance and create a customised meal plan based on your specific needs and the type of weight loss surgery you underwent. A dietitian can help you understand the dietary changes necessary for optimal health, make appropriate food choices, and offer ongoing support throughout your weight loss journey.

Dietary Guidelines After Surgery

It is essential to familiarise yourself with the dietary guidelines provided by your dietitian. These guidelines will apply regardless of the bariatric procedure performed, such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, or gastric banding. Generally, the post-surgery diet progresses through several phases, starting with a liquid diet, gradually transitioning to soft foods, and then regular solid foods. Each phase has specific recommendations regarding portion sizes, nutrient intake, and texture of foods. Understanding these guidelines will help you navigate your diet effectively and prevent complications.

After surgery, you must follow a special diet for about six weeks. This diet is set out over four stages:

  1. Fluids (liquids)
  2. Pureed (blended) foods
  3. Soft, moist foods, and then finally,
  4. Healthy Eating (Normal solid food)

The first three stages will be followed for two weeks each until you return to normal healthy eating.

Multivitamin supplementation is needed after surgery. Daily multivitamins will be required for all bariatric procedures and must be continued lifelong.

Additional supplementation may be required.

You will have ongoing access to our specialist bariatric dietitian, who can help you navigate what to eat after your surgery to set you up and keep you on the road to success. Our weight management psychologists can help you overcome challenges in preparing for and succeeding after surgery.
