Constipation After Weight Loss Surgery
Melbourne weight loss surgeon, Dr. Melissa Beitner, discusses this common problem
Constipation is a common issue after bariatric surgery, especially soon after surgery. Always consult with your weight loss surgery team for personalised advice, but there are five general strategies that may help manage constipation after bariatric surgery:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and can help soften stool, making it easier to pass. Aim for at least 8 cups (at least 1.5L) of water daily, but individual needs may vary.
- Fibre Intake: Gradually increase your fibre intake through food sources such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Fibre adds bulk to the stool and promotes regular bowel movements. However, make changes gradually to allow your digestive system to adjust, as increasing fibre too quickly can lead to bloating and discomfort.
- Regular Physical Activity: Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine. Exercise helps stimulate bowel movements and promotes overall digestive health. Start with low-impact activities like walking and gradually increase intensity as advised by your healthcare provider.
- Probiotics: Consider taking probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that support gut health. Probiotics can help maintain a healthy balance of gut flora, which is essential for proper digestion and bowel regularity.
- Laxatives or Stool Softeners:
in most cases, over-the-counter laxatives or stool softeners are fine to use after WLS to relieve constipation. Certain types of laxatives may not be suitable for everyone so it's important to check with your healthcare team before starting.
