Body Positivity

Dr. Melissa Beitner who specialises in the treatment of obesity in Melbourne explains

Body positivity is a social movement that promotes a positive view of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, and physical abilities. Essentially, it’s the idea that everyone is worthy of love and a positive body image, regardless of how the media and society tries to define beauty or the ideal body type. Proponents focus less on physical appearance and more on the overall health of the human body.

Still, there remain misconceptions about what body positivity means and its true impact. On one hand, some studies have suggested that the normalisation of 'plus-size' risks the hidden danger of obesity.

A healthy body image means feeling good about looking and feeling comfortable in one's body. Conversely, they report that having a negative body image can put one at a higher risk for mental health conditions, including eating disorders. In a study published in the December 2019 issue of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, body dissatisfaction is closely associated with depression, use of performance-enhancing substances, and low self-esteem.

So where to from here? Body positivity and the desire to lose weight are not mutually exclusive because both concepts centre on self-acceptance and wellbeing. Body positivity advocates for loving and appreciating one's body regardless of its shape or size, promoting mental and emotional health by challenging societal standards of beauty. Simultaneously, wanting to lose weight can be a personal goal aimed at improving physical health, increasing energy levels, or boosting self-confidence.
The key is to approach weight loss from a place of self-care and respect rather than self-criticism or societal pressure. By intertwining body positivity with personal health goals, you can strive for a healthier lifestyle and weight while maintaining a positive and nurturing relationship with your body.
